Curt Conley

High school: Hometown is Clayton, Ohio.  Attended Northmont High School from 1986-89. Lettered 3 years in football, and set the single season passing record in football in 1987.  Selected to play in the all area game as a senior.  Earned 2 letters in basketball.  Set single season reserve scoring record as a sophomore.  Earned three letters in baseball.  All league second team in 1988 and threw a no hitter against Wayne high school striking out 18 of 21 batters and picked 2 batters off first base.   First team all league in 1989 and all Ohio second team after posting a 6-1 record and a 0.77 era.  Posted a 16-6 career pitching mark and helped school to 2 league titles.  Still ranks third in school history in era (0.77 in 1989). Also ranks 7th and 10th in strikeouts (71 in 1989 and 69 in 1988).  Also ranks 9th in pitching efficiency (56.6 in 1989).  Voted most valuable player in all-area game in 1989. Selected as three sports captain as a senior.  

College:  Attended Ball State University from 1990-93.

1990:  Led BSU and ranked 10th in Mid American Conference with a 3.71 era.  Made first collegiate appearance at Florida State University and pitched 2 innings of no hit relief.  Earned first career victory against IUPUI with 4 scoreless innings. 

1991:  Voted team’s most valuable pitcher.  Led team in innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games, and shutouts.  Tossed first collegiate career shutout against Valpraiso University.  Threw first and only no-hitter in the history of the Great Lakes collegiate summer league.

1992:  Named team’s most valuable pitcher for second straight season.  Led team in wins, era, strikeouts, innings, games started and complete games.  Received all conference honorable mention. Ranked 6th in the Mid American Conference in era.  Named pitcher of the week May 4-10 after posting a pair of victories over rival Miami University to provide BSU with its first trip to the MAC baseball tournament.  The pitcher of the week honor was the first for a ball state pitcher since 1976.  Tossed BSU’s first no hitter since 1988 in the first game against Miami University, then came back the second day and tossed 1 1/3 innings of no hit relief to pickup the second win, which was his fifth in a row.   In his last eight outings, allowed just nine earned runs and 30 hits in 44 1/3 innings. Played for the Cincinnati Spirit in Great Lakes collegiate summer league that won the league title and went 28-15. 

1993:  Voted team’s most valuable pitcher for 3rd straight year.  Led team in every pitching category.  Set BSU single season wins record with 9 wins.  After losing the first two games of the year, set another BSU record by winning 9 consecutive games.  Voted to second team all MAC as a senior.  Named MAC pitcher of the week May 15-21 for second time in career.  First player in BSU history to be voted to first team all tournament team after winning BSU’s first ever tournament game with a 1-0 complete game win over Kent State’s Dustin Hermanson.   Drafted in the June baseball amateur draft by the Colorado Rockies in the  26th round.

 Professional:  Colorado Rockies.

Spring training was in Tucson, Arizona.  Played first season for the Bend Rockies in Bend, Oregon.  Moved to the bullpen and used primarily as set up man, and closer. Finished 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA and 2 saves in 30 innings and 27 strikeouts.    Second season played for the Central Valley Rockies in Visalia, California.  Finished second in the California league in appearances with 57.  Third year played with the Salem Avalanche in Salem Virginia.  Finished  4-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 39 games with 35 strikeouts and 3 saves.    Finished career in Salem, with a short stint in New Haven, Connecticut with the Ravens, Colorado’s double A team.
